Nurseries & Sources of Native Plants

Nurseries that Specialize in Native Plants

There is no single nursery in the region with a comprehensive supply of native plants of all types. The purely native nurseries listed here each have different strengths. If you are looking for large specimens of trees or shrubs, you will need to go to a "conventional" nursery that does not specialize in natives.

  • New England Wetland Plants
    820 West Street, Amherst, MA 01002 | 413-548-8000
Wholesale or minimum purchase only. Order must be placed in advance of pick-up.
Good selection of plants typically found in wetland environments, with stock well suited to large-scale installations and restorations. Trees and shrubs run small (are not "specimen" trees) and are sold in #1 or #2 containers; herbaceous plants are 2" plugs sold in flats. Native seed mixes available. All plants sold are true species; grown from locally collected seed.

  • New England Wild Flower Society
Garden in the Woods, Framingham, MA 01701 | 508-877-7630 x3601 —or— Nasami Farm, Whately, MA | 413-397-9922
    Retail sales only.
Sells perennials, ferns, and grasses, along with some trees and shrubs. Great source for New England wildflowers, especially some of the harder to find species such as lady-slippers and trilliums.  Garden in the Woods is open during the growing season except on Mondays; Nasami hours are limited. Check their hours and schedule.

  • Project Native
    342 North Plain Road (Route 41), Housatonic, MA 01236 | 413-274-3433
Retail sales. Can also supply plants for large projects and restorations.
An excellent source for native plants overall. Approximately 180 species sold-- trees, shrubs, perennials, ferns, and grasses. The majority (approximately 90%) are native to Berkshire County in western MA, and all are native to the northeastern United States. Virtually all plants are grown at their nursery in Housatonic. Native seed mixes also available. Their website is updated monthly with current availability.

  • Sudbury Nurseries West
    81 Ben Hale Road, Gill, MA 01354 | 413-863-9898
Wholesale or minimum purchase only. Order must be placed in advance of pick-up.
One of the largest growers of native plants in the state, this nursery specializes in native trees and shrubs that are propagated from locally collected seed or cuttings. These are available B&B in larger specimen sizes and/or as smaller plants in containers. Their stock also includes ferns and perennials and willow tubelings for wetland restoration.

  • Van Berkum Nursery — New England and Appalachian Woodlanders® or New England Meadows
    Deerfield, NH 03037 | 603-463-7663
Wholesale sales to the trade only. Also available retail through many area nurseries.
This nursery grows herbaceous perennials, both native and non-native. Notably, it has developed three distinct lines of native plants, propagated at its nursery in New Hampshire— the New England Woodlanders® (shade plants native to New England), Appalachian Woodlanders® (shade plants native to the southern Appalachian region but still hardy in New England), and the New England Meadows line (plants native to New England that grow in sunny conditions). If your local nursery doesn't have them in stock, they should be able to order them for you.

Other Noteworthy Nurseries with Native Plant Availability

We recommend doing your homework on the native plant species you desire before purchasing. Unfortunately, the labeling of natives in the trade is not always available, clear, or accurate. The native range or origin may not be available. And sometimes native plant hybrids (natives that have been crossed with non-natives) are mislabeled as native cultivars. That said, there are good sources of native plants from nurseries that sell both natives and non-natives. It is always worthwhile seeking out the nursery staff who are especially knowledgeable about, and interested in, the subject.

Note

We are seeking to expand this page to include other nurseries that offer a very good selection of native plants to the public, and that will help customers procure them. If you represent such a nursery in Massachusetts or the surrounding region, please contact us so that we can learn more about your operations. If you are a customer of the nurseries listed, we welcome your comments and hearing about your experience.
